Recently the interest in organic light-emitting field-effect transistors (OLET) has increased rapidly as the devices combine switching behavior of transistors with light emission of LEDs. Ambipolar OLETs exhibit the ability to position the light emission zone in the transistor channel via applied drain or gate biases. Such capability is utilized to fabricate two different types of color tuneable OLETs. In the first approach two different acenes with different emission bands are deposited as a parallel stack in a OFET configuration. In a second approach the horizontal displacement of the recombination zone within the channel of a F8BT transistor is utilized. The spatially controllable light emission is achieved by exciting a wedge-like shaped colour conversion layer. The electroluminescence emission maximum can be shifted continuously by about 50 nm. The physics and potential applications of color tuneable OLETs will be discussed.

Prof. von Seggern is a full professor in the Institute of Materials Science, Darmstadt University of Technology. His research interests cover X-ray storage phosphors for medical and scientific applications, organic electronics (OLEDs and OFETs), and piezoelectric polymers. He is a pioneer in organic light-emitting transistors, has the refereed publications of 250 (Number of citations: 3800) and 5 patents.
